Women to avoid unintended pregnancy, they utilize different kinds contraceptive available in the market. The effectiveness of those contraceptives is measured, when they are used according to the instruction. In some case pregnancy occurred with out the proper use of these contraceptives. patient education is vital to use contraceptive properly. According to the article by Mariamne H. and Elissa R. Henken, a women eat contraceptive jelly on toast to to avoid pregnancy is classical example the failure of patient education. Even though the women shared responsibility about her ignorance, the pharmacist failure to educate the women cause the pregnancy. The article mentioned many examples of unintended pregnancy due to misunderstanding between clients and health care providers. For example the teaching of how to use condom is misleading to the client.the educator use hands instead of models. one thing the educators do not realize is the level of their client's comprehension about the information they provide. The clients use their common sense to relate their action and contraceptive' s intended use. for example to swallow contraceptive that are intended to inset in vagina and to insert birth control pill in vagina that are intended to oral use is a lack of common sense rather than failure in patient education.

ReplyDeleteI have to agree with your assessment on the article regarding the mis-use of contraceptives; however, we must take into consideration there are people who may not be able to read or following instructions well. With those having learning disabilities and illiteracy, it makes for a terrible combination for those attempting to follow instructions that my look as foreign as Latin to many. Making sure people have an understanding based on their level of communication and understanding is a trial within itself.
Abebe,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great illustration of how patient education is valuable within our health system. Education is not only they key to patient understanding. There are various aspects that an educator must take into consideration. Things such as building trust, rep-or, and understanding of patient knowledge etc. are all factors that an educator must be knowledgeable about before they can expect a client to intake what the knowledge of medical products or usage.
Seyoum,
ReplyDeleteYou are absoutley correct when it comes to failed communication between the health provider and the patient especially when it comes to such a critical subject related to sex and prevention of pregnancy. Contraceptions has a high error rate if not followed correctly and unfortunatley many of the ones that fall in that trap is due to ignorance or lack of knowledge on the product taken. Many healthcare providers are not taken the time to explain thus resulting in unexpected pregnancices. Great work!
