prenatal testing is important to couples who wants to know their child is healthy or they are expecting a child who have abnormalities when she/he born. It is obvious that couples may face difficult decision to bring birth defect child or decide alternative measures.
screening tests during pregnancy allow parents if the fetus is risk of having birth defects. for example " First-Trimester screening test combine the result special ultrasound tests and blood tests to detect Down syndrome and tiresome 18" This screening identifies chromosomal abnormalities. Other screening test such as Maternal serum screening test that measure maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein. Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis is a genetic procedure to identify genetic defects prior to implantation. through this procedure Defects such as cystic fibrosis( single gene disorder), Hemophilia (recessive sex-linked disorder), Rett syndrome (dominant sex-linked disorder).
These are few examples of birth defects that can be identified through screening and diagnostic procedure. The importance of prenatal testing and the decision couples or single parent make have an impact to family and society as whole. my Job as respiratory therapy in children medical center allowed me to observe the the suffering of children that have birth defects and the stress of their parents.Even though modern science and thechnology support and prolong the life of birth defect childerns, it sad to to see them not to utlize their full potentioal as normal childern in their life span.

Hello Seyoum,
ReplyDeleteI found your blog to be very informative. I as well did my blog on prenatal testing and found my research very similar to the information you found. I believe that prenatal testing is beneficial for a couple and should be used when a couple decides to have children. Being able to know if a couple’s unborn child may have birth defects gives the couple time to weigh their options and see what will work best for them. Like you said there are plenty of programs and options for parents who have children with birth defects. Thank you for sharing your insights and information with me.
